About this Supplication & Hadith Context

Meaning, spiritual background, and authentic virtues from the Sunnah

The Sunnah Opening Supplication (Dua al-Istiftah)

Thana ('Subhanaka Allahumma wa bihamdika...') is the opening supplication recited immediately after saying Allahu Akbar (Takbeerat al-Ihram) in the first Rakat of Salah. It glorifies Allah's absolute perfection, sanctifies His blessed Name, and affirms that nothing in creation shares His sovereignty.

Authentic Sources in Hadith

Reciting this specific wording of Thana is confirmed in Sunan Abi Dawud (775), Jami' at-Tirmidhi (243), and Sahih Muslim (399), where Aisha (RA) and Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (RA) narrated that the Prophet (PBUH) began his prayer with these exact words.
