"Learn how to pray Salatul Istikhara step-by-step with authentic Arabic Dua, transliteration, English meaning, and rules. Understand how Allah guides your decisions without relying on dreams."

What is Salatul Istikhara?

Salatul Istikhara (صَلَاةُ الاِسْتِخَارَة) is the Islamic consultation prayer taught directly by Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. The Arabic word Istikhāra stems from Khayr (خير), meaning goodness; thus, Istikhara means "asking Allah to decree and guide one toward what is truly best."

Jabir ibn Abdullah (RA) reported: > "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to teach us the Istikhara in all matters just as he used to teach us a Surah from the Quran." > — Sahih al-Bukhari 1162

Whenever a Muslim stands at a crossroads — deciding on a marriage proposal, signing an employment contract, relocating, or making a substantial investment — Istikhara unites human diligence (Istisharah / consulting wise people) with divine guidance (Istikharah).

The Dream Myth: How Does Istikhara Really Work?

A widespread misconception is that after praying Istikhara, you will fall asleep and see a dream revealing the answer (such as seeing the color green or white for yes, or black and red for no).

  • This is entirely ungrounded in the Sunnah:
  • Step 1Clarity and Ease: If the decision is good for you, Allah opens your chest to it (Inshirah), makes the logistics effortless, and facilitates circumstances.
  • Step 2Obstacles and Redirection: If the decision is harmful, unexpected hurdles will emerge, deals may collapse, or your heart will naturally turn away from it without regret.
  • Step 3Action is Required: Do not freeze or wait passively. After praying Istikhara, pursue the best logical course of action while trusting Allah to steer the results.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

When should I pray Salatul Istikhara?

Pray Istikhara whenever you are faced with an important, permissible (Halal) choice between two or more options — such as marriage, accepting a job offer, purchasing a home, moving cities, or choosing a field of study. You do not pray Istikhara for mandatory obligations (e.g., whether to pray Fajr) or prohibited matters.

Do I have to see a dream after praying Istikhara?

No. Requiring or expecting a vivid dream with colors (like green or white) is a cultural misconception not supported by the Sunnah. Istikhara works by Allah placing contentment (Inshirah al-Sadr) in your heart, facilitating the beneficial path with ease, or gracefully removing obstacles and blocking the harmful path.

Can I pray Istikhara during menstruation?

A woman experiencing menstruation or post-natal bleeding cannot perform the two Rakat of Salah. However, she can make Wudu (or maintain cleanliness) and recite the Istikhara Dua directly from memory, a phone, or a book without performing the prayer.

How many times can I repeat Istikhara?

You may repeat Salatul Istikhara as many times as needed until your heart reaches clarity and resolution. Many classical scholars recommended repeating it up to seven times if uncertainty persists.
