✦The Authentic Hadith Story (Sahih al-Bukhari 3113)

The origin of this supplication is recorded in Sahih al-Bukhari (3113) and Sahih Muslim (2727) from Ali ibn Abi Talib (RA):

Lady Fatimah az-Zahra (RA), the beloved daughter of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), suffered from blistered, calloused hands from operating the heavy stone hand-mill to grind grain for her household, and her neck bore painful marks from carrying heavy water skins.

When captives of war were brought to Medina, Fatimah (RA) went to her father (PBUH) to request a domestic servant to help ease her severe physical labor.

That night, the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) visited Fatimah and Ali as they were resting in bed. Sitting between them, he lovingly told them:

*"Shall I not guide you to something better for you than a servant? When you retire to your bed, recite SubhanAllah thirty-three times, Alhamdulillah thirty-three times, and Allahu Akbar thirty-four times. That is better for you than a servant." > &mdash; (Sahih al-Bukhari 3113)*

Ali (RA) remarked years later: "By Allah, I never neglected it since I heard it from the Prophet (PBUH)." When asked if he recited it even during the tumultuous night of the Battle of Siffin, he affirmed: "Not even on the night of Siffin."
