What is Salatul Tasbeeh (The Tasbeeh Prayer)?

Salatul Tasbeeh (also written as Salat ul Tasbeeh / Salatul Tasbeeh Namaz / Salatul Tasbeeh ki Namaz / صلاة التسبيح) is a profound 4-Rakat voluntary (Nafl) prayer taught directly by Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) to his uncle, Abbas ibn Abdul Muttalib (RA). The Prophet (PBUH) highlighted its extraordinary spiritual virtues, saying:

"O uncle, shall I not give you, shall I not present to you, shall I not confer upon you ten blessings? If you pray four Rakats, Allah will forgive your sins: the first and the last of them, the old and the new, the unintentional and the intentional, the small and the great, the secret and the open." (Sunan Abi Dawud 1297, Sunan Ibn Majah 1387)

The Prophet (PBUH) advised offering this prayer daily; if not possible, once a week (on Friday); if not, once a month; if not, once a year; or at least once in a lifetime.

Salatul Tasbeeh Namaz Niyat (How to Form the Intention)

Before beginning salat ul tasbeeh, form the intention (salatul tasbeeh namaz niyat) in your heart:

  • In English: "I intend to pray four Rakats of voluntary Salatul Tasbeeh for the sake of Allah Almighty, facing the Holy Kaaba."
  • In Urdu / Roman Urdu: "Niyat karta/karti hoon main char (4) Rakat Nafl Salatul Tasbeeh ki, waste Allah Ta'ala ke, rukh mera Kaaba shareef ki taraf, Allahu Akbar."

The Special 300 Tasbeeh Formula

Throughout salatul tasbeeh, the following third Kalima formula is recited 300 times (75 times in each Rakat):

سُبْحَانَ اللّٰهِ وَالْحَمْدُ لِلّٰهِ وَلَا إِلٰهَ إِلَّا اللّٰهُ وَاللّٰهُ أَكْبَرُ > (SubhanAllahi wal-Hamdu lillahi wa La ilaha illallahu wallahu Akbar) > "Glory be to Allah, All praise is due to Allah, There is no deity except Allah, and Allah is the Greatest."
