The Weight of Debt in Islam

Debt (Ad-Dayn) is not merely a financial predicament; it is a heavy spiritual burden that causes sleepless nights, daytime humiliation, and severe anxiety. Prophet Muhammad ﷺ frequently sought refuge in Allah from the overpowering grip of debt:

"O Allah, I seek refuge in You from grief and sadness, from weakness and laziness, from cowardice and miserliness, and from the burden of debt and being overpowered by men." > — Sahih al-Bukhari 2893

If you or a loved one are carrying burdensome loans, mortgages, or emergency debts, the Sunnah provides authentic supplications that invite divine intervention, ease, and miraculous relief.

1. The Mountain-Clearing Dua Taught to Ali (RA)

A man burdened with a heavy contract of freedom (mukatab) came to Ali ibn Abi Talib (RA) complaining of his inability to pay. Ali (RA) said: > "Shall I not teach you words that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ taught me? Even if you had debts as enormous as Mount Thabir, Allah would settle them for you!"

— Jami' at-Tirmidhi 3563 (Hasan), Musnad Ahmad 1319

2. The Comprehensive Morning & Evening Dua for Debt & Anxiety

Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (RA) narrated that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ once entered the mosque and saw a man named Abu Umamah (RA) sitting alone during non-prayer hours, visibly distressed. The Prophet ﷺ asked him why he was sitting there. Abu Umamah replied: "Entangling anxieties and debts, O Messenger of Allah."

The Prophet ﷺ said: "Shall I not teach you words which, if you say them, Allah will remove your worry and settle your debt?"

Allāhumma innī a'ūdhu bika minal-hammi wal-ḥazan, wa a'ūdhu bika minal-'ajzi wal-kasal, wa a'ūdhu bika minal-jubni wal-bukhl, wa a'ūdhu bika min ghalabatid-dayni wa qahrir-rijāl

"O Allah, I seek refuge in You from worry and grief, I seek refuge in You from incapacity and laziness, I seek refuge in You from cowardice and miserliness, and I seek refuge in You from being overwhelmed by debt and overpowered by men."

Abu Umamah (RA) recounted: > "I recited these words, and Allah took away my worry and settled my debt for me." > — Sunan Abi Dawud 1555

3. The Grand Sovereign Supplication (Ayat al-Mulk)

Mu'adh ibn Jabal (RA) was absent from Friday prayer because of debts he owed. The Prophet ﷺ advised him to recite the verses of Surah Ali 'Imran (3:26-27), followed by this supplication:

رَحْمٰنَ الدُّنْيَا وَالْآخِرَةِ وَرَحِيمَهُمَا، تُعْطِيهِمَا مَنْ تَشَاءُ وَتَمْنَعُ مِنْهُمَا مَنْ تَشَاءُ، ارْحَمْنِي رَحْمَةً تُغْنِينِي بِهَا عَنْ رَحْمَةِ مَنْ سِوَاكَ

Raḥmānad-dunyā wal-ākhirati wa Raḥīmahumā, tu'ṭīhimā man tashā'u wa tamna'u minhumā man tashā', irḥamnī raḥmatan tughnīnī bihā 'an raḥmati man siwāk

"O Most Merciful of this world and the Hereafter, You grant them to whom You will and withhold from whom You will. Grant me a mercy that enriches me beyond needing the mercy of anyone besides You." — (Al-Mu'jam al-Saghir li-Tabarani 558)

 • Step 4Honest Intention: Prophet Muhammad ﷺ stated: "Whoever takes the wealth of people with the intention of paying it back, Allah will pay it back on their behalf" (Sahih al-Bukhari 2387).

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

What is the best Dua to get out of debt?

The premier Dua taught by Prophet Muhammad ﷺ to Ali ibn Abi Talib (RA) is: 'Allāhummak-finī bi-ḥalālika 'an ḥarāmik, wa aghninī bi-faḍlika 'amman siwāk' (O Allah, suffice me with what You have made lawful over what You have forbidden, and enrich me with Your bounty so that I need no one besides You). The Prophet ﷺ assured that even if one had debt equal to Mount Thabir, Allah would settle it on their behalf (Jami' at-Tirmidhi 3563).

Does Istighfar help pay off debt?

Yes, immensely. In Surah Nuh (71:10-12), Allah promises that seeking forgiveness sends abundant rain and expands wealth and offspring. Sincere daily Istighfar (recited 100 times or more on a Tasbeeh counter) cleanses sins that block sustenance and opens unexpected doors of Halal provision.

When is the best time to recite Duas for debt relief?

The prime times of acceptance (Ijaba) include: (1) The last third of the night during Tahajjud prayer; (2) In Sujood (prostration) during Salah; (3) Between the Adhan and Iqamah; (4) During the final hour of Friday before Maghrib; and (5) In the morning and evening Adhkar.

Why was Prophet Muhammad ﷺ so concerned about debt?

In Sahih Muslim (1886), the Prophet ﷺ taught: 'All the sins of a martyr are forgiven except debt.' Debt ties a soul down in the Hereafter if left unpaid without a sincere intention or effort to clear it. Seeking divine assistance through these authentic prayers is a core Sunnah obligation.
